SAR Convention Cross-Reference
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
SOLAS V/33 obliges masters to render assistance.
SOLAS V/33 obliges the master of any ship at sea, on receiving a distress signal, to proceed with all speed to assist persons in distress, so far as this can be done without serious danger to the ship. It dovetails with the 1979 International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), which divides the oceans into SAR regions with designated Rescue Coordination Centres. V/33 also lets the master be released from the duty when informed that other ships have been requisitioned and are complying. The duty is mirrored in UNCLOS Article 98. Masters log the decision and any release from the obligation.
