Definition

Deck officer typically responsible for navigation equipment and charts.

The second officer is a deck watchkeeping officer holding the STCW Regulation II/1 officer in charge of a navigational watch Certificate of Competency. On most merchant ships the second officer is the navigator: correcting charts and publications, preparing the passage plan from berth to berth, and maintaining the bridge equipment. The rank keeps the 0000 to 0400 and 1200 to 1600 watch by convention. It is the operational-level grade between third officer and chief mate.
