Hand-flag visual signaling system using letters.
Flag semaphore signals letters and numerals by the angles of two hand flags relative to the sender’s body, eight positions per arm giving the 26 letters plus control signals. It was the standard short-range visual method between ships before reliable radio and is still taught and used where radio silence or equipment failure applies. It is slower than Morse light but needs no power and is read by eye or binoculars across line of sight.
