IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases, adopted 2001.
The IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases were adopted as Assembly resolution A.918(22) on 29 November 2001, replacing the Standard Marine Navigational Vocabulary of 1985. The SMCP fix a controlled English for bridge-to-bridge, ship-to-shore (VTS), and onboard safety communication, with message markers (Instruction, Advice, Warning, Information, Question, Answer, Request, Intention). Ability to use the SMCP is a STCW competence for officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 GT or more.
