Shore power

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

OPS or cold ironing infrastructure, IEC/IEEE 80005 series.

Shore power, also called onshore power supply or cold ironing, connects a berthed ship to the grid so it can shut down its auxiliary diesel generators, cutting at-berth CO2, NOx, SOx, and noise to whatever the local grid emits. Connection standards are the IEC/IEEE/ISO 80005 series covering high-voltage (80005-1) and low-voltage systems. FuelEU Maritime requires container and passenger ships to use onshore power or a zero-emission alternative at major EU ports from 2030, driving port-side investment in compatible connection points.
