SOLAS Ch. II-1/3-2
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
PSPC requirements.
SOLAS regulation II-1/3-2 mandates the Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) for dedicated seawater ballast tanks and double-side skin spaces. It applies to ships of 500 GT and above contracted on or after 1 July 2008, and requires the protective coating to be applied to the PSPC adopted as IMO resolution MSC.215(82), with a target useful life of 15 years. The standard fixes surface preparation to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5, an edge treatment, a nominal dry film thickness of 320 microns in a two-coat epoxy system (the 90/10 rule on DFT), salt limits, and a coating technical file. Surveyors verify the coating condition at intermediate and special surveys.
