SSI (Sustainable Shipping Initiative)

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) is a multi-stakeholder membership coalition of shipowners, charterers, classification societies, ports, and financiers working on cross-sector sustainability in shipping. It published its Roadmap to a sustainable shipping industry in 2016, updated in 2020, structured around six areas: oceans, communities, people, transparency, finance, and energy. The energy and finance workstreams cover decarbonization, alternative fuels, and aligning capital with the transition. SSI is project-driven rather than regulatory, producing tools such as biodiversity and human-rights toolkits and the State of Sustainable Shipping benchmark. Membership is voluntary and its outputs are guidance, not binding standards.
