Suez Canal Authority (SCA)

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

Egyptian authority operating the canal.

The Suez Canal Authority is the Egyptian state body that owns, operates, and sets tolls for the Suez Canal, the 193.3 km sea-level link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. It was created on 26 July 1956 when Egypt nationalized the canal from the Suez Canal Company. The SCA fixes dues in Suez Canal Net Tonnage based on annual tariff circulars and special discount programs, manages the convoy system and the 2015 New Suez Canal twin-lane section, and led the Ever Given refloating in March 2021. Red Sea attacks from late 2023 cut its transit volumes.
