Suez Canal Net Tonnage (SCNT)
E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and riskDefinition
Special tonnage for canal dues.
Suez Canal Net Tonnage is the special tonnage measure on which Suez Canal transit dues are charged, distinct from a ship’s IMO net tonnage under the 1969 Tonnage Convention. The Suez Canal Authority computes SCNT under its own rules of measurement set out in the canal’s Rules of Navigation, applying defined deductions and additions to the volumetric calculation; the figure appears on the vessel’s Suez Canal Special Tonnage Certificate. Toll circulars then apply a dues rate per SCNT ton, with surcharges and discounts by ship type and laden or ballast condition.
