Surface Warfare (SUW)
E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcementDefinition
Anti-surface ship warfare domain.
Surface warfare (SUW), also written anti-surface warfare (ASUW), is the naval warfare area covering the detection, tracking, and destruction of enemy surface ships. It is one of the three classic naval warfare areas alongside anti-air warfare (AAW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW). SUW weapons include anti-ship missiles such as Harpoon and Exocet, naval guns, torpedoes, and aircraft-delivered ordnance, cued by ship and aircraft radar and over-the-horizon targeting. In the US Navy the surface-warfare officer (SWO) community crews and fights the surface-combatant force.
