Task Unit (TU)
E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcementDefinition
Subdivision of a Task Group.
A subdivision of a task group, identified by a second decimal in the designator (Task Group 70.1 yields Task Unit 70.1.1). A task unit groups a handful of ships or aircraft for a specific tactical job within the task group’s mission, such as a screening unit or a strike unit, under a unit commander. It subdivides one further level into task elements (70.1.1.1). The four-tier task force, task group, task unit, and task element hierarchy lets commanders allocate and re-task forces precisely while keeping the chain of command legible.
