TEU yard density

TEU yard density is the number of twenty-foot equivalent units a container yard can stack per unit of paved area, the measure of how intensively a terminal uses its land. It depends on the handling system: straddle carriers reach about 500 to 700 TEU per hectare, rubber-tyred and rail-mounted gantries about 800 to 1,000, and high wide-span automated stacking cranes up to roughly 2,000 TEU per hectare. Density is set by stacking height, ground-slot pitch, and the aisle width the equipment needs. Higher density saves land but adds rehandling moves, so the planner trades yard area against crane productivity and dwell time.
