Tornado, International
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Olympic catamaran 1976 to 2008.
A 20 ft (6.1 m) high-performance racing catamaran designed by Rodney March in 1967, chosen as the International Tornado one-design. It carries a fully battened mainsail, a single trapeze for the two-person crew, and a hull light enough to plane at 20-plus knots. The Tornado was the Olympic multihull class from Montreal 1976 through Beijing 2008, then dropped when the Games multihull slot lapsed before the Nacra 17 took it in 2016. It remains an active International class under World Sailing.
