Multihull
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Catamaran or trimaran vessel type.
A multihull gains stability from the wide spacing of two hulls (a catamaran) or three (a trimaran) rather than from ballast, so it is lighter, sails flatter, and reaches far higher speeds than a comparable monohull. The trade is a smaller range of positive stability: once capsized a multihull stays inverted. The type spans beach catamarans such as the Hobie 16, the Olympic foiling Nacra 17, and the offshore record-breaking trimarans that chase the Jules Verne Trophy.
