Definition

1883 novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Treasure Island is Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure novel, serialized in the magazine Young Folks from 1881 to 1882 as The Sea Cook and published as a book by Cassell in 1883. Young Jim Hawkins sails on the Hispaniola to recover Captain Flint’s buried gold and uncovers the mutiny led by ship’s cook Long John Silver. The book defined the popular pirate image: the treasure map marked with an X, the Black Spot, pieces of eight, and the parrot, shaping every later treasure-hunt narrative.
