Trim moment

B1. Naval Architecture

Definition

MCT*trim, equivalent moment.

A trim moment is the longitudinal moment that produces or expresses a change of trim, computed as a weight times its longitudinal distance from the center of flotation, or equivalently as displacement times the LCG-to-LCB separation. Dividing the trim moment by the moment to change trim one centimeter (MCT1cm) gives the trim change in centimeters. The change is apportioned to the forward and aft drafts about the center of flotation, not the midships point, so the two end drafts move by amounts set by the position of F. Trim moment is the working quantity for planning a ballast or cargo shift to hit a target trim.
