Uluburun Shipwreck
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Late Bronze Age trader off southern Anatolia, c. 1320 BCE.
The Uluburun shipwreck is a Late Bronze Age merchant vessel that sank off Uluburun near Kas in southern Anatolia about 1320 BCE, excavated by George Bass and Cemal Pulak from 1984. Its cargo, including ten tons of copper ingots, tin, Canaanite jars, glass, ivory, and goods from at least seven cultures, is the richest single assemblage of the period and proof of a dense eastern Mediterranean trade network. The wreck is a cornerstone of Bronze Age maritime archaeology and is displayed at Bodrum.
