Uluburun Wreck

The Uluburun wreck is a Late Bronze Age merchant ship that sank off Uluburun near Kas on the southern Turkish coast around 1300 BC. Excavated by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology between 1984 and 1994 under George Bass and Cemal Pulak, it yielded about ten tons of Cypriot copper in oxhide ingots, tin, Canaanite jars, glass ingots, ebony, and a gold scarab of Nefertiti. The cargo, drawn from at least seven cultures, is the richest evidence for eastern Mediterranean trade of the period; the hull was pegged mortise-and-tenon construction.
