F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Library classification for maritime literature.
The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) is a bibliographic classification developed by Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine from the Dewey system, first published in French from 1905. It shelves maritime literature mainly under class 656.6 (water transport, shipping) and naval architecture and shipbuilding under 629.5, with seamanship and navigation under 656.61. Maintained by the UDC Consortium in The Hague since 1992, it lets libraries combine these notations with auxiliary signs to classify works on ships, ports, and the sea.
