The Naval Institute Press is the book-publishing arm of the United States Naval Institute, a private professional society founded on 9 October 1873 at Annapolis, Maryland; the press itself dates to 1898. Based at 291 Wood Road, Annapolis, it publishes naval and maritime history, biography, reference, and fiction, including Tom Clancy’s The Hunt for Red October (1984) and the Bluejacket’s Manual. The Institute also issues the monthly journal Proceedings and Naval History magazine, making it a leading publisher of American maritime literature.
