Vinland Map Controversy

A dispute over a parchment world map, held at Yale’s Beinecke Library since 1965, that appears to show “Vinilanda Insula” (a Norse-discovered land west of Greenland) and was claimed as a circa-1440 pre-Columbian document. From the 1970s, analysis of its ink found anatase, a titanium-dioxide pigment not used until the 20th century. In 2021 Yale conservators concluded the map is a modern forgery, with titanium in the ink throughout and an altered later inscription. The genuine Norse presence at L’Anse aux Meadows (about AD 1000) is unrelated to the map.
