Visby Maritime Cluster

The maritime concentration on Gotland, the Swedish Baltic island whose principal town Visby gives its name to the Visby Protocol of 1968 that amended the Hague Rules on carriage of goods by sea. The island’s maritime activity centers on Gotland ferry links, fishing, and the Swedish naval Visby-class corvettes built by Saab Kockums. As an industry grouping the Visby cluster is modest; the name’s lasting maritime weight is the Hague-Visby Rules drafted at the 1968 Brussels diplomatic conference’s Visby session.
