War risks insurance covers loss or damage from war, civil war, revolution, insurrection, capture, seizure, arrest, restraint, detainment, mines, torpedoes, terrorism, and similar perils, which the standard hull and machinery and P&I covers exclude through the war exclusion clause. It is written on wordings such as the Institute War and Strikes Clauses, often with a listed-areas approach: voyages into areas the Joint War Committee lists require notice and an additional premium. Crew and loss-of-hire extensions can be added. It is a distinct layer in a ship’s insurance program.
