SUA Convention 1988
X22. Piracy, Maritime Security and Armed ProtectionDefinition
Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, in force March 1992.
The Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, adopted in 1988 after the 1985 Achille Lauro hijacking and in force 1 March 1992, criminalizes seizing a ship by force, violence against persons aboard, and acts that endanger safe navigation, and obliges parties to prosecute or extradite offenders. A 2005 Protocol broadened it to cover use of a ship in terrorism and the transport of weapons of mass destruction. It addresses the criminal-law side of maritime security that the ISPS Code addresses preventively.
