B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Four-stroke medium-speed engine.
The Wartsila 46F is a medium-speed four-stroke diesel with a 460 mm bore and 580 mm stroke, producing about 1,200 kW per cylinder at 600 rpm. Built in inline 6 to 9 and V 12 to 16-cylinder versions, it spans roughly 7.5 to 20 MW, serving main propulsion on cruise ships, ferries, and large vessels and as a power-plant prime mover. The 46F runs on heavy fuel oil or marine gas oil at a specific fuel oil consumption near 170 to 173 g/kWh, meets IMO Tier II, and reaches Tier III with selective catalytic reduction. It evolved from the earlier Wartsila 46 series.
