Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
Approved welding procedure.
A Welding Procedure Specification sets out every essential variable for a welded joint: process, parent material grade and thickness, consumable, joint design, preheat, interpass temperature, heat input, and position. It is qualified by welding a test coupon and subjecting it to the mechanical and non-destructive tests required by the class society and IACS rules, producing a Procedure Qualification Record. Production welding then follows the approved WPS, and the welder making it must hold a current performance qualification for that procedure range.
