Workplace Violence (Maritime)

Workplace violence in the maritime context covers physical assault, harassment, and armed threats faced by seafarers and port workers, ranging from interpersonal violence aboard to armed robbery and piracy during a voyage. The 2022 amendments to the ILO Maritime Labour Convention 2006, and ILO Convention No. 190 on violence and harassment (2019, in force 25 June 2021), address it as an occupational hazard. The ISPS regime treats armed boarding and intrusion as security incidents; BMP5 (2018) and the IMO armed-robbery reporting framework cover the external threat to crews in high-risk waters.
