Security Drill

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

ISPS-mandated quarterly exercise.

A security drill is a regular practical exercise testing individual elements of a ship security plan, such as access control, restricted-area response, or use of the ship security alert system. ISPS Code Part B paragraph 13.6 recommends that drills be conducted at least once every three months, and within one week if more than 25 percent of the crew are changed at one time and have not taken part in a drill in the previous three months. The ship security officer runs them; they are narrower than the broader security exercises.
