The X-BOW is an inverted, near-vertical bow form from the Norwegian designer Ulstein that pierces waves instead of flaring over them, cutting bow slamming and pitch acceleration in a seaway. For the machinery, gentler motions mean lower slamming loads on the forward structure and steadier propeller inflow, so the propulsion plant holds a more even load and added resistance in waves drops, which steadies fuel rate in head seas. The reduced speed loss in waves helps a vessel hold schedule on installed power. It is fitted on offshore supply vessels, construction ships, and some expedition cruise ships.
