Albert Dock, Liverpool
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Historic 1846 dock complex housing the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
A dock complex on Liverpool’s waterfront, opened 1846, designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick as the first British structure built from cast iron, brick, and stone with no structural timber. It now anchors the Royal Albert Dock, a UNESCO Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City listing from 2004, and houses the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the International Slavery Museum, and Tate Liverpool. The non-combustible warehouse design let goods be hoisted directly from ship to bonded store.
