Authorized Economic Operator (AEO)
E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and riskDefinition
Customs-recognized trusted trader with simplified controls.
A trader certified by its customs authority as compliant and secure, earning faster clearance, fewer inspections, and mutual recognition abroad. The status traces to the World Customs Organization SAFE Framework of Standards (2005) and is implemented in the EU through the Union Customs Code (Regulation 952/2013, Articles 38 to 41). AEO status splits into customs-simplification (AEOC) and security-and-safety (AEOS) variants. For shipping lines and forwarders it lowers the supply-chain security burden and supports sanctions and dual-use screening obligations.
