Automatic Berthing System

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Sensor/control suite for assisted berthing.

A sensor and control suite that brings a ship alongside with reduced manual input, fusing GNSS/RTK position, laser or radar docking sensors, and a control law that manages speed of approach and angle to the berth. No dedicated IMO performance standard governs autoberthing as a class; it draws on track-control standard IMO MSC.74(69), DP rules (IMO MSC/Circ.645), and class guidance such as DNV-CG-0264. Trials on ferries and large vessels since 2019 have demonstrated approach control to centimeter-level lateral accuracy.
