LiDAR (Maritime)
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
Laser ranging for situational awareness/autonomy.
Light Detection and Ranging used on ships and at terminals to build a 3D point cloud of nearby objects, quays, and other vessels by timing reflected laser pulses. It feeds autoberthing and autonomous-navigation sensor fusion, giving short-range, high-resolution distance and closing-rate data that radar resolves poorly near a berth. No IMO carriage requirement exists; LiDAR appears in MASS trials and autoberthing projects, and in class guidance such as DNV-CG-0264 on autonomous and remotely operated functions.
