Baltic Exchange

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

London-based provider of freight market information and assessments.

The London membership body that produces independent freight market information for the bulk shipping industry, owned by Singapore Exchange since 2016. Its broker panels submit daily assessments that build the Baltic Dry Index, the dirty and clean tanker indices, the gas indices, and the time-charter and route averages used to settle forward freight agreements. The Exchange traces its origins to 18th-century coffee houses and now sets the settlement data underpinning the dry and wet derivative markets.
