Bio-LNG
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
Liquefied biomethane used as drop-in fuel for LNG ships.
Bio-LNG is liquefied biomethane produced by upgrading and liquefying biogas from waste, manure, or other biomass, chemically identical to fossil LNG so it drops straight into existing LNG fuel systems and dual-fuel engines. Its value is the low well-to-tank carbon when certified under a scheme such as ISCC, which sharply cuts well-to-wake intensity for FuelEU and the proposed GFI. Methane slip during combustion still applies and is counted at AR5 GWP100 of 28, so the climate benefit depends on both the feedstock and engine slip.
