Biofuel (Marine)
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
Fuel derived from biomass such as FAME or HVO blended with marine fuel.
Marine biofuels are derived from biomass and used as drop-in or blended replacements for fossil bunkers, most commonly FAME biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil blended with VLSFO or MGO. Their lifecycle benefit depends entirely on the feedstock: waste-based oils score well, while crop-based fuels can carry land-use-change emissions that erode the saving. They need little or no engine modification, which makes them an immediate option, but sustainable feedstock supply limits how far they scale.
