Well-to-Tank (WtT)

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Emissions associated with fuel production and delivery to the ship.

Well-to-tank is the upstream stage of fuel lifecycle accounting: the emissions from extracting or growing the feedstock, refining or synthesizing the fuel, and delivering it to the ship’s tank, before any of it is burned. It is the stage where green hydrogen-derived fuels earn their low-carbon claim and where blue and grey hydrogen, or biofuels with land-use change, can carry a hidden burden. Adding well-to-tank to tank-to-wake gives the well-to-wake figure the IMO and FuelEU Maritime regulate.
