Blue Ammonia

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Ammonia produced from natural gas with CCS.

Blue ammonia is made from natural gas via steam methane reforming with the process CO2 captured and stored, lowering but not eliminating well-to-tank emissions depending on the capture rate and upstream methane leakage. It is positioned as a transition supply while green ammonia capacity scales, since it can use existing ammonia infrastructure. Its climate value under FuelEU and the IMO LCA Guidelines hinges on the certified upstream emission factor, so a low capture rate or high methane leakage can leave it well above green ammonia.
