Carbon Capture on Board (OCC)

Onboard carbon capture (OCC) strips CO2 from a ship’s exhaust gas while at sea, liquefies or mineralizes it, and stores it aboard for later offloading to a shore facility. Post-combustion chemical absorption with amine solvents dominates marine pilots; DNV verified Carbon Ridge’s centrifugal system at up to 98% capture, and Evergreen installed a unit on the 14,110 TEU Ever Top in 2024. Capture rates of 75 to 90% are realistic at acceptable energy penalty. No statutory IMO rule yet governs OCC safety or its credit toward CII; class guidance fills the gap.
