Container Security Initiative (CSI)

A US Customs and Border Protection program that stations CBP officers in foreign seaports to pre-screen and, where flagged, examine US-bound containers before they are loaded. Launched in 2002 after the September 2001 attacks, CSI uses advance manifest data and the Automated Targeting System to identify high-risk boxes, then requests host-customs inspection or non-intrusive imaging at the load port. It operates at dozens of ports covering most maritime containerized cargo bound for the United States.
