Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR)

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required under SOLAS XI-1/5.

The Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR) is an onboard document that provides an unbroken history of a ship’s flag, registered owner, bareboat charterer, ISM company, classification society, and security certification. SOLAS XI-1/5, adopted by resolution MSC.99(73) on 5 December 2000 and in force from 1 July 2004, requires every ship to which SOLAS Chapter I applies (passenger ships and cargo ships of 500 GT and upward on international voyages) to carry it. The flag Administration issues each numbered CSR document, and every change of registered particulars generates a new sequential entry, so the file forms a tamper-resistant chain kept aboard.
