A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

International Safety Management Code, mandatory under SOLAS IX.

The International Safety Management Code requires every company operating ships in scope to establish a documented safety management system covering safety and environmental policy, defined responsibilities ashore and aboard, a designated person ashore, procedures for shipboard operations and emergencies, reporting of nonconformities and accidents, maintenance, and internal audit. It is mandatory under SOLAS Chapter IX. Compliance is verified by a Document of Compliance for the company and a Safety Management Certificate for each ship, issued by the administration or a recognized organization after audit.
