Deck crane (hydraulic)

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Hydraulically driven cargo crane.

A hydraulic deck crane is a slewing cargo crane driven by a hydraulic power pack rather than electric winches, used for self-loading and discharge on general cargo ships, bulk carriers, and offshore vessels. Variable-displacement pumps feed hydraulic motors for hoist, luff, and slew, giving stepless speed control and inherent overload protection through relief valves. Safe working load is rated against radius, so the load chart falls as the jib luffs out. Cranes follow classification and lifting-appliance rules and carry a register of lifting appliances under ILO and flag-state requirements. Pedestal-mounted models slew a full 360 degrees.
