Mooring winch (split drum)
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Drum-type winch for berthing and harbor operations.
A split-drum mooring winch divides its barrel into two sections by a flange: a narrow tension or working section that holds the few active turns under load, and a wider stowage section that carries the spare line. Separating the two stops the working turns from riding over slack stowage wraps, which would distort the rendered tension and damage the line. The winch heaves and renders the mooring line and holds it on a band or disc brake whose holding capacity is set against the line’s breaking strength under OCIMF MEG4, typically with the brake set to render below the line’s break load. Drive is electric or hydraulic.
