Deepening project

A deepening project is capital dredging that increases an existing channel or berth below its original authorized depth to admit deeper-draft vessels. It is driven by a larger design vessel: each extra meter of authorized depth lets a bulker or container ship load more cargo on the same call. The work cuts new material, often stiffer clay or rock not removed in the first construction, so it draws cutter suction dredgers, backhoe dredgers, or drilling and blasting alongside trailing suction hopper dredgers. Scope covers the approach channel, turning basin, and berth pockets together, with under-keel clearance recomputed for the new draft and a disposal or beneficial-use plan for far larger volumes than maintenance dredging.
