US wartime predecessor of MSC.
A US wartime ocean-transport organization, more precisely the Army Transport Service and the wartime sea-lift apparatus that, with the Naval Transportation Service, was consolidated into the Military Sea Transportation Service on 1 October 1949. MSTS was renamed Military Sealift Command in 1970. The body operated and chartered cargo and troop ships moving Army and Navy personnel and materiel; its successor, MSC, remains the Navy’s strategic sealift provider under US Transportation Command.
