ECS
B3. Nautical ScienceDefinition
Electronic Chart System (non-mandatory).
An Electronic Chart System (ECS) is any shipborne electronic charting system that does not meet the full ECDIS performance standard, so it cannot satisfy the SOLAS chart-carriage requirement on its own. ECS may display raster or vector charts, including non-official data, and lacks the type-approval, mandatory alarms, and integrity checks of ECDIS. It is common on small craft, fishing vessels, and pleasure boats not subject to SOLAS V/19, and aboard SOLAS ships only as a planning aid alongside the approved system. The line is the IMO ECDIS performance standard MSC.232(82) and IEC 61174: meet it and the system is ECDIS, fall short and it is ECS.
