SOLAS V/19

SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19 sets the carriage requirements for shipborne navigational systems and equipment, scaled by ship size and date of build. All ships carry a magnetic compass, a compass bearing device, means to correct heading and bearing to true, charts and nautical publications, a GNSS or terrestrial radionavigation receiver, and a sound-reception system if the bridge is enclosed. From 300 GT the list grows: 9 GHz radar, echo sounder, speed and distance log; from 3,000 GT a second radar (at 3 GHz or a second 9 GHz) and ARPA; from 10,000 GT a second independent speed log. ECDIS is mandatory for most ships under the phased Regulation 19.2.10 schedule, and AIS and BNWAS carriage are fixed here too.
