Emergency fire pump
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Independent fire pump per SOLAS Reg. II-2/10.
An emergency fire pump is a fixed, independently powered fire pump that supplies the fire main when the main fire pumps are unavailable because their machinery space is flooded or on fire, required by SOLAS Ch II-2 Reg 10. It sits outside the main machinery space, has its own prime mover (usually a diesel engine) and sea suction, and must deliver the regulated pressure and two jets of water without relying on main propulsion or main electrical power. The diesel-driven units carry dedicated fuel for several hours of running, with the fuel flashpoint not below 43 C, so firefighting capacity survives a main-space casualty.
