Emergency Source of Electrical Power
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Required under SOLAS II-1/42.
The emergency source of electrical power is the independent generator or battery that supplies safety services when the main electrical plant fails, kept in a space above the bulkhead deck and outside machinery casings. SOLAS II-1/42 governs passenger ships and II-1/43 governs cargo ships, setting the loads to be supplied (emergency lighting, navigation lights, GMDSS radio, fire detection, steering as applicable) and the duration, generally 36 hours for passenger ships and 18 hours for cargo ships. A transitional source provides power during the changeover. The arrangement is verified at the construction survey for the Cargo Ship Safety Construction Certificate.
